BIOGRAPHY: Rosemary Argente

Rosemary Argente (nee Ishmail) was born on 09 January 1930 and raised in Malawi. Since she was fifteen, she made notes on things that interested her, and over the years she prepared the notes into manuscripts. In her twilight years, from age eighty, she became a full-time writer. She was admitted into the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London, England, on 23 February 1999, she was awarded Postgraduate Diploma (Bar Vocational Course) by the University of Northumbria at Newcastle on 29 June 2001 and was called to the Bar of England and Wales on 11 October 2001.

Rosemary studied English law at Brooks University, Oxford, Scottish and English law at the University of Dundee, Scotland, and obtained an LL.B Honours at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston in 1999. She was employed by the Department of State, American Embassy, Blantyre, Malawi, as Consular Assistant in charge of all consular matters from 1960 to 1975.

From 1963 to 1986 she was Senior Executive/Shareholder (part-time) in Mapanga Estates Limited (MEL), Blantyre, Malawi, in textile and management of realty. She became full-time Senior Executive/Shareholder in MEL when the American Embassy moved to the new Capital City of Lilongwe in 1975.

She obtained a Secretarial Diploma at Pitman’s College, London in 1957 and worked as secretary in various commercial and legal firms in Blantyre, Malawi.

From 1946 to 1955 she was Dress Designer/Dressmaker in her own business. In 1951 Rosemary married Francis Honor Argente, had one daughter, Lorna, and divorced in 1955.

In 1937-1941 She attended Primary School at the Henry Henderson Institute, Church of Scotland Mission, Blantyre, Malawi, and was awarded a copy of the Holy Bible (in Chinyanja, now Chichewa) as dux of junior school.
